Memorial Day 2015Wednesday, June 17, 2015
I'm terribly late at sharing these photos from our Memorial Day weekend, but things have been a little hectic around here. Speaking of which, there's only a few more days until we're officially Georgia residents! Over Memorial Day weekend, we went kayaking on the Shenandoah River right outside Luray, Virginia. We were more in the mood for a relaxing float down the river (versus navigating Class II rapids and flipping kayaks), so we opted for the easier trip. We packed a lunch that Mark had the honor of guarding and began our 11mi trip around noon.
This portion of the river is neat because one bank is a part of the George Washington National Forest and the other is private property. We floated past a few cows who were chilling in the water by their pastures. Mark thought it was amusing to try and charge the cows in his kayak, but their reaction was to watch him with disgust and then flick their tails in the water, spraying him with murky (and probably poopy) river water.
Although this was the easier of the trips, I am not a fan of rapids in any capacity. These were so small that the river outfitters referred to them as "ripples" instead of rapids, but I was still white-knuckling my paddle in a few spots. I'm happy to report that no one tipped over and our lunch survived the trip!
We rented our kayaks from Shenandoah River Outfitters and have had a great experience with them both times we've gone. I'd definitely recommend them if you're ever in the area.
